Proverbs 17:17 (KJV)17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

For many years I always wondered if the second half of that scripture meant that there was adversity to be expected between siblings. And after experiencing much adversity between me and my sisters I figured that was the case. But after looking at this verse in the New Living Translation I realized it isn’t what I thought.

17 A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.

That has a far different meaning than I originally thought. So my message is simple: Whether you are born from the same mother or are siblings by other means, I encourage you to show up for one another in life. We all endure hardship and face adversity, and we sometimes need one another to walk through the things we face. God’s Word says we are born to help. So instead of fighting and allowing issues to keep us divided, if at all possible let’s fight with and for each other.
